दृकाण dṛkāṇa = Gk. δέκανος = 1/3 portion of a rashi also spelled दृक्काण dṛkkāṇa - द्रेक्काण drekkāṇa दृकान dṛkāna द्रेक्क drekka - द्रेक्क् drekk [trik] द्रेष्काण dreshkāṇa
Drekkana ---------- Table of 36 Decanates = dreshkamsha varga = D-3 360-degree Circle divides into 36 decanates = 3-deg each = 1/10th of a each of the 12 rashi contains 3 subsections = 36 divisions see also: Shri Poddar's causes of death via 36 drekkana |

36 Portions Historically, many cultures have used this type of base-12, 36-part divisional reckoning to apportion the sky and calculate the passage of time. Classical Greek astrology made wide popular use of decanate descriptions, with each decanate interpreted for personality, and each made sacred to a particular deity. During the era of Greek settlement following the conquest of northern India by Alexander, Greek decanate lore made a significant contribution to Jyotisha literature.
In the Western tradition, the custom of 36 divisions is attributed to Egyptian sources. |

QUOTATION from BPHS 12-14 [Tanu Bhava] Decanates and Bodily Components " Head, eyes, ears, nose, temple, chin and face is the order of limbs, denoted (by the various Bhavas), when the first decanate of a Rashi ascends.

Elements
Jyotishashastra records the use of a 36-portion typological chart dreshkamsha varga which divides each 30 degree rashi into 3 parts = the three rashi of the same natural element. This system was introduced by the Greek astrologers (presumably inherited from Egypt) so it uses the typical western four elements instead of the classical vedic five.
EXAMPLE
EXAMPLE of Decanate Divisions as graphicly represented in the D-3 varga ----------------- In the nativity of Santa Teresa de Avila, indriya lagna = 9-deg Karkata drekkana order within the 30-degree rashi of Karkata
Indriya-lagna 9-Karkata occupies the first 1/3 portion [drekkana] of Karkata rashi = D-3 lagna = Karkata Within the first decanate of Karkata, 9-deg is near the end of the decanate boundary. Therefore the D-3 lagna is near the end of Karkata = 28 deg ----------------- D-1 Surya = 29 Meena the three drekkana of the rashi of Meena
D-1 Surya occupies the 3rd drekkana of Meena Therefore D-3 Surya occupies Vṛścika, and Surya's D-3 degree occupies the end of the third decanate _________________ D-1 Mangala occupies 21-Urisha decanates of Urisha =
D-1 Kuja occupies the third decanata of Urisha Therefore D-3 Kuja occupies Makara -------------------------------------- D-1 Shani occupies 19-Vṛścika [at the tail end of 2nd-decanata] decanates of Vṛścika =
D-3 Shani occupies the end of Meena -------------------------------------- See dreshkamsha varga for qualitative, interpretive, behavioral meanings associated with the individual decanates. D-3 can confirm D-1 predictions for any third-amsha person or activity, such as sibling-cousin, schoolmate-workmate, ensemble-team, management-administration, cohort, hand-craft, etc. |
Planetary Rulers and Deity Rulers of the 36 Drekkana
= 1/10th portions of the 360 degree circle The easiest way to see these amsha portions = use the graphic = dreshkamsha varga
for predictions, consider (1) temporal ruler of the drekkana (2) natural ruler of the 1/36 portion |
