Mrs. Jane Appleton Pierce suffered from lingering lifelong tuberculosis and severe depression related to the serial deaths of her father and each of her three young sons. Known as the Shadow of the Whitehouse JAP maintained a state of black-garbed mourning during her husband's entire four-year term of office.

During the antebellum days, FLOTUS was expected to produce a vigorous schedule of parties and dances. However, socializing was of no interest to Mrs. Pierce. She stayed aloof in her private bedroom, descending only for a few events. She believed that politics was grotesque and immoral.
