Shani in Vrischika
vis-à-vis Mangala
Shani is distressed in the "Emergency"
rashi of His enemy Kuja.
Only in the case of parivartamsha yoga
can these two adversarial planets reach
any type of balanced relationship.
Vrischika's shamanistic, intuitive-hunter drive is hypersensitive, restless and alert.
Kuja's musculature is poised for action: ready to
respond to the life-force of the prey at any moment.
Shani's steady, neutralizing, slow, cautious,
bureaucratic character is highly uncomfortable in the role of managing
the constant threat of sudden changes. Fundamentally, Shani is
terrified. In Vrischika, Shani lives in fear of annihilation
through catastrophic upheaval and sudden, forced change.
The scorpion lays silent, waiting for to be
provoked by some thoughtless invader. Then, in one shocking, sudden
movement, his lethal sting can kill.a creature one hundred times his
size.
Scorpio is about penetrating, invading, plunging deeper into unknown terrain.
Against the force of invasion, Shani is busy
holding the fort, resisting Vrischika's exploratory movement with
strict and structured "no permission" control energy.Shani's
control of the reptile brain places the physical body in a lifetime
state of 'emergency alert'
Thus, the irresistible force
meets the immovable object. Result = stasis; fear of
catastrophic change; paralysis of total
control. Shani-Vrischika personalities can be intensely focused
on preventing danger. They are naturally over-prepared for potential
emergencies, and spend much time planning to maintain order in the
event of an attack.
Working from
the expectation that 'what can go wrong will go wrong',
Shani-Vrischika tends to be very sensitive to sudden changes, and
intensely controlling of their environment.

Difficulties to be expected during the
Vimshottari period of Shani-Kuja
when Kuja occupies 6th-from-Shani,
e.g. Mesha rashi.
Kuja dominates and controls Shani, which gives the native
tremendous masculine competitive energy but at the expense of
Shani's natural protective limit-setting.
"Common
sense" (Shani) social conformity and pragmatic ability to
follow the rules of the group (when social acceptance depends on it)
are damaged if not destroyed.
Basically, this person has no common sense!
Yet, consider the case of world-famous pop-music entertainer Michael
Jackson.
In a creative profession, the earlier years - until the age of Shani,
after age 58 - may be exceptionally productive under the intensely
dynamic, masculine, competitive, athletic "engine" of
Kuja.
It is the later years which suffer and collapse due to lack of
social dignity.
These natives crave
speed and power, especially if Kuja is lagnesha. They can be
masterful charioteers but eventually their lack of awareness of the
laws of time and space - to say nothing of the power of human
society's ability to ostracize and condemn - will destroy
the physical body.

he irresistible force meets the immoveable
object. Kuja has more power in this situation, and Shani's house is
helped by receiving drishti from its landlord. Comfort levels depend
on Shukra's disposition.
If Shukra favors Shani, the native will be
more constrained socially. The inner tension between Kuja's desire
to "break out" artistically and sensually vs. Shani's
desire to prevent catastrophic changes to the personal stability
will be lessened.
If Shukra favors Kuja, the native may go
"whole hog" toward full athletic expression of one's
artistic and sensual temperament, while Shani will quake with fear
about how to manage the shocks.
Whatever Shukra's disposition, fear of
dangerous upheavals (Shani) is forced to interact daily with
aggressive pursuit of sensual pleasures.
It is like a see-saw: neither side ever
experiences a stable reign of power, and either can suddenly
up-heave the other. Vimshottari periods of Shani will oppress
the sensuality through fear of massive instability in the
personality. Yet as soon as Shani period is finished, Kuja will vie
for dominance again.

uncomfortable, and causes the native to take wrong decisions but be
unable to change course.
The native
tends to generate an energized idea

driven to "run with it".
When the idea is proven untenable, the
native is unable due to Shani's terror of sudden changes, to let

would result from acting on one's superior claims.

Kuja in Kanya is prone toward verbal
criticism in lieu of physical action, and Shani somewhat freezes the
body in Vrischika.
Irregular eating and sleeping, as the
native is channeling a lot of fear signals from the brain. Much
helped if Budha occupies one of His own rashis, although assistance
from landlord Budha makes the native very chatty!
Can be a good writer or media communicator,
especially regarding scary subject matter (see A. Hitchcock.).

Physical initiative (Kuja) is reduced by heavy
responsibilities, while the native goes about the serious business
of negotiating deep social changes. One lives in a state of fear of
catastrophic upheaval, yet applies energy and drive toward
day-to-day balancing negotiations (Thula). This "one day at a
time" strategy is usually enforced by some very difficult
relationships.
A complex and covertly sexualized personality,
trying to be appropriate but often unaware of their own behavior
(Kuja 12th-from-Shani). Capable of personal discipline, but can only
control behaviors of which one is aware.

wo enemies in too close is usually a bad
thing. However in this case Kuja dominates Shani, and the
native experiences strong physical vitality while also suffering "Accidents, sudden illness or

bring.
It is a recipe for controlled work with

beneficial usually for military work that requires physical prowess

Handles danger with skillful preparation that
allows swift and definitive response. Frightened but pro-active in
the moment of fear. With Surya or lagna, may be an expert in
"safe handling" of inherently unsafe materials.
With Budha, may be gifted in
dealing with the criminally insane. Very skillful and
realistic in handling death and dying.

The main trouble arises during Vimshottari periods of Kuja.
Shani occupies the inauspicious 12th-from-Mangala.
During the Vimshottari
Mangala-Shani period, the native may experience a severe
energy deficiency And all
physical
initiative goes into the
doldrums.
The forward-driving engines of athletic, physical, yang, competitive
energy may grind to a halt.
The reason for this event is subconsciously held fear of attack
due to Arrogant individual aggression against the tribal ethos.
he fear is left over from previous
incarnations when one insulted the group ethic, and was fatally
Ostracized.
In a past life, one was driven from the village with burning
torches, or forced into the wilderness to starve.
Rather than unconsciously repeat (and
repeat, and repeat) the whole "negative expectations"
drill, it is recommended to address this karmic fear completely and
thoroughly.
Modern tools include psychotherapy and
reflective meditation (domain-12).
If the fear can be exhumed from its control
position in the
subconscious
hiding place, the energy will return.

he parivartamsha benefits Kuja's house,
somewhat restrains Kuja's ambitions by Shani's dristhi, and grants
Shani some extra stability and respect. The higher levels of
institutional dignity, deriving from Makara's leadership
signification, allow the native to move into dangerous areas of
social enterprise without undue fear. Although challenging
social boundaries somewhat, the native expects legitimacy and gets
it.
Uchcha Kuja receiving drishti of His lord
strengthens Kuja's house, and brings out the best in Mangala's
'captain of industry' executive capabilities.
Kuja's uchcha personality is both very aware
of the Rules (Shani) and swiftly decisive (Kuja) with a powerful
competitive instinct. Thus uchcha Kuja alone is nearly always the
karaka for remarkable success in business.
In the parivartamsha relationship, the native
succeeds in gaining high wealth and position undoubtedly, but
one's special task is o
steer the ship of social change in some way.
Shani is terrified in Vrischika. Shani fears
all the traditionally dangerous experiences, taboo materials, such
as sex, death, dark waters, magic, etc.
Shani is stressed to the
limits of social control by
trying to prevent sudden attack from
outside *and* from the inside (traitors, hidden terrorists).
Kuja uses the respectability of success in
commerce and position in the established social hierarchy to
leverage Shani's fears of annihilation through exposure to hidden
and mysterious threats, in order to move society forward through a
phase of instinctive fear.
When the danger of structural collapse reaches
too high of a level, Kuja steps in with strong decisions to right
the ship.
Kuja essentially takes that mysterious threat
and makes a business out of it! And a very good business
indeed.
Examples are: people who succeed in
negotiating the dangers of the stock market, who skillfully manage
large pools of hidden wealth, success in mining and
deep-sea exploration, in handling taboo materials such as sex and
death, in experimental or controversial surgeries, commercially
successful tantriki, alchemists and magicians.
In the modern economy, Shani-Vrischika may be
profitably involved in
recycling
of materials, including blood and human organs, which breaks the
taboo against handling used items, esp. parts of bodies. Natives may
profit from new surgeries, new medical reconstructive materials, and
from products and attributes of sexual culture.

In parivartamsha with Kumbha-Kuja, Shani has
the experience of "virtual Kumbha". Shani is brilliant in
Kumbha, where He elaborates very large, very complex,
rule-driven systems such as marketplace relations, or the human
nervous system.
Kuja for His part receives the experience of
"virtual Vrischika". In his native eighth sign, Mangala is
penetrating, secretive, surgical, psychological, and a seeker of
ultimate danger.
he typical results are exposition and
elaboration of
highly complex systems of hidden
knowledge.
his yoga does not produce the wealth and
social position of Maraka-Vrischika (above), unless the two houses
involved are 11 and 2.
However the native is always an agent of
scientific advance for society. There is some increase in social
dignity, through recognition by special-interest groups who are at
the vanguard of new thought, although not until late middle age.

Although only Guru and Rahu cast trinal
drishti, all planets enjoy more comfortable relationships when they
occupy a mutual trine.
This is a gentle and easy angle.
Because the physical energy is healthy when Kuja occupies a sign of
Guru, Kuja's tenant Shani benefits and the life is balanced.

Q:
I am trying to figure out what the predictive impact of Shani and Kuja would
be in my chart.
Mithuna Lagna, with Kuja in Taurus (12th house) and Shani in
Scorpio(6th house). The 12th lord Venus is in Aquarius. On your Kuja/Shani angle
page you have the mutual aspect of the planets on these signs listed as a
difficult situation. What would be the impact of this situation?
A:
Namaste,
In general, consider the natural
animosity between Kuja (who wants to push ahead) and Shani (who wants to
resist change).
hen consider the rashi lords, Shukra (who wants sensual
pleasure) and Kuja (who wants to have emergencies).
-
Can Kuja slow down enough to enjoy
sensual pleasure?
-
Is safety-and-conformity Shani going to
be happy under constant threat of emergency?
he answer to both of course is no -- Shani-Kuja are in distress
from being in mutual-attack angle and then they are unhappy in their rashis.
hen consider the bhava.
-
Kuja in domain-12 plunges into the dream
world, doing his conquer-hunt-penetrate thing mainly on the astral plane.
Very dynamic imagination, but reduced physical vitality.
-
Shani in domain-6 actually gives good
results, bad planet in a bad house is a good thing. Shani is the force of
resistance and Ari bhava is the house of enemies. Shani can outlast enemies
through sheer stamina, and the results are - ultimately and with time -
pretty good.
hen look at the navamsha, to see the spiritual and marriage
effects of each graha, and see what their angle is in D-9.
Evaluate the houses ruled by both Shani and Kuja measuring from
Chandra lagna.
-
If Shani or Kuja rule good houses from
the Moon, their conflict with each other can be emotionally lessened.
-
If they rules difficult houses vis-à-vis
the Moon, then periods of Kuja-Shani or Shani-Kuja can be total hell.
Lots to think about, I know. Jyotisha takes time and study. But
basically, Shani vs. Kuja = the irresistible force meets the immovable object.
They are just at loggerheads rather permanently, and only with great life wisdom
can the person born in this situation hope to negotiate a truce.
All the best,
Barbara Pijan Lama, Jyotisha
