Use of Arudha Lagna, from ~~ Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach,  by P. V. R. Narasimha Rao  www.vedicastrologer.org

"While lagna stands for true self, arudha lagna (AL) stands for the maya associated with self. It shows the how the native is perceived in the material world. It shows the status of the native.

A timid and confused individual may be perceived in the world as a strong leader. In that case, that is the maya associated with his personality and AL shows it.

Because arudha lagna deals with maya, illusions, perceptions and impressions, it is very important in judging various materialistic things.

For example, Parashara and Jaimini taught that the 11th and 12th houses from AL show financial gains and expenditures.

  • Natural malefics in the 3rd and 6th houses from AL show someone who is perceived as a bold person who hits enemies hard.

Since such impressions are usually formed about materially successful people, malefics in the 3rd and 6th from AL make one bold and materially successful.

  • Natural benefics in the 3rd and 6th houses from AL make one very gentle and restrained in public behavior. Such a person does not fight with others boldly.
  • This combination is usually found in the charts of saints and saintly and mild-natured people.

The 10th house from lagna in D-10 shows one's true conduct in society. It shows the one's career and the true nature of one's karma (work).

  • The 10th house from AL in D-10 shows perceptions about one's conduct in society. It deals more with one's status in career."

"Computation of Bhava Arudhas, from ~~ Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach by P.V.R. Narasimha Rao, /www.vedicastrologer.org/

Arudha padas of all the 12 houses (bhavas) in all the divisional charts are defined as follows:

(1) Take sign containing the house of interest in the divisional chart of interest.

(2) Find the sign occupied by the lord of that house.

NOTE: Aquarius is owned by Saturn and Rahu. Scorpio is owned by Mars and Ketu. Take the stronger lord in the case of houses falling in these two signs. (...)

(3) Count signs from the house of interest to the sign containing its lord. Counting is in the zodiacal direction always.

For example, if the house we are interested in is in Gemini and its lord Mercury is in Aquarius, we count signs from Gemini to Aquarius and get 9.

(4) Count the same number of signs from the sign containing the lord and find the ending sign.

In the above example, we count 9 signs from Aquarius and we end up in Libra.

(5) Exception: If the sign found thus in step (4) is in the 1st or 7th from the original sign in step (1), then we take the 10th sign from the sign found in step (4).

Otherwise we don't make any change.

(6) The resulting sign contains the arudha pada of the house of interest."

The "exception" causes a lot of trouble for beginners. Here is another explanation:

  • The Arudha Pada cannot be in the starting rashi, nor in the 7th-from starting rashi.

  • If, after normal step-wise counting, the arudha lagna ends up in either the starting rashi or 7th-from the starting rashi, then take one extra step.

  • The extra step =  jump 10 rashi forward.

    • E.g., if the lagnesha of the 'house of interest' occupies domain-4, then 4th-from-4th = domain-7.

    • The rule = arudha lagna can never be 7th-from-starting rashi.

  • So, jump 10 houses forward from the 7th house = domain-4 again.

  • Lagna pada in this case = domain-4.

~~ Cologne Digital Sanskrit Lexicon

O Brahmin, now I tell you about Upa Pada, the auspiciousness of which will confer on the native happiness from progeny, wife etc.

The Pada of Lagna, as discussed earlier, is of prime importance.

Upa Pada is calculated for the Bhava, following the natal Lagna.

This Upa Pada is also called Gauna Pada.

O excellent of the Brahmins, if Upa Pada is yuti with, or receives a Drishti from a benefic Graha,

  • one will obtain full happiness from progeny and spouse.

Should the Upa Pada be in the rashi of a malefic, or receives a Drishti from, or is yuti with a malefic,

  • one will become an ascetic and go without a wife.

If (in the said circumstances) there be a benefic Drishti (on Upa Pada, or the related malefic), or a yuti,

  • deprival of spouse will not come to pass.

In this case Surya, being exalted, or in a friendly Rashi, is not a malefic.

He is a malefic, if in debilitation, or in an enemy's Rashi.

[Translator's Notes. Regarding Upa Pada calculations, there are more than two views on the same Shloka of Maharishi Parashara, or an identical Sutra from Jaimini.

In this text, the word 'Anuchara' is used, which denotes 'the Bhava, following the Lagna at birth'.

Normally this is Vyaya Bhava.

However, when we study other commentaries on Jaimini (Chaukhambha Hindi edition), we are taught, that

it is Vyaya Bhava in the case of an odd Rashi ascending and

it is Dhana Bhava in the case of an even Rashi ascending.

Accordingly the Pada for the 12th, or the 2nd from Lagna is called Upa Pada.

In calculating Upa Pada the rules mentioned in verses 4 and 5 of the previous chapter be kept in mind.]

7-12

Spouse & children (the family to which one gives birth)

Effect from the 2nd from Upa Pada:

If the 2nd from Upa Pada is a benefic Rashi, or receives a Drishti from, or is yuti with a benefic

  • the same good results (as for wife and sons) will come to pass.

If, in the 2nd from Upa Pada , there is a Graha in its debilitation Rashi, or debilitation Amsha, or is yuti with a debilitated, or malefic Graha

  • there will be destruction of wife.

If the said occupant be in its exaltation Rashi, or Navamsha, or receives a Drishti from another Graha,

  •  there will be many charming and virtuous wives.

Oh Brahmin, if Mithuna happens to be the 2nd from Upa Pada,

  • then also there will be many wives.

O excellent of the Brahmins, if the Upa Pada, or the 2nd there from be occupied by its own Lord, or, if the said Lord is in his other own Bhava,

  • the death of wife will be at advanced age.

13-22.

Wife (spouse)

Death of Wife, causes

Face, Values, Knowledge, and Wealth of Wife

girth of wife

eyes, ears, nose & teeth of wife

Wife from the 2nd of Upa Pada

If a Graha being constant indicator of wife (i.e. the 7th Lord, or Shukra) is in its own Bhava,

  • there will be loss of wife only at a later stage.

If the Lord of Upa Pada, or the constant significator of wife, is in exaltation, the wife will be from a noble family.

  • Reverse will be the case, if the lord is debilitated.

O Brahmin, if the 2nd from Upa Pada is related to a benefic

  • the wife will be beautiful, fortunate and virtuous.

Should Shani + Rahu be in the 2nd from Upa Pada,

  • the native will lose his wife on account of calumny, or through death.

if Shukra + Ketu are in the 2nd from Upa Pada,

  • the native's wife will be troubled by disorder of blood, leucorrhoea (Pradar) etc.

Budha + Rahu in the 2nd from Upa Pad

  • will give a stout-bodied wife.

If the 2nd from Upa Pada happens to a rashi of Budha  and is tenanted by Mangala + Shani,

  • the wife of the native will suffer from nasal disorders.

Similarly a Rashi of Mangala, becoming the 2nd from Upa Pada and occupied by Mangala + Shani,

  • will cause nasal disorders to one's wife.

Guru + Shani will, if be in the 2nd from Upa Pad,

  • cause disorders of ears and/or eyes to the wife.

If Budha + Mangala are placed in the 2nd from Upa Pada other than a rashi of Budha or Kuja, or, if Rahu + Guru in the 2nd from Upa Pada,

  • the native's wife will suffer from dental disorders

Shani + Rahu together in a rashi of Shani, which is the 2nd from Upa Pada,

  • will cause lameness, or windy disorders to the native's wife.

These evils will not come to pass,

  • if a benefic is Yuti,

  • or a Drishti from a benefic,

  • or from another benefic in the case of affliction being caused by a benefic himself.

23-30

Progeny

O Brahmin, all these effects be deduced from

  • the natal Lagna,

  • Lagna Pada

  • the 7th from Upa Pada

  •  and the Lords thereof

So say Narada and others.

About Sons.

If Shani, Chandra and Budha are together in the 9th from one of the said places (Shloka 23),

  • there will be no son at all,

while Surya, Guru and Rahu so placed

  • will give a number of sons.

Chandra so placed

  • will give a son,

while a mixture of Grahas

  • will delay the obtainment of a son.

The son, caused by the Yuti of Surya, Guru and Rahu,

  • will be strong, valorous, greatly successful and will destroy enemies.

If Mangala + Shani are in the said 9th,

  • there will be no son, or a son will be obtained by adoption, or brother's son will come in adoption

In all these cases

  • odd Rashis will yield many sons,

  • while even Rashis will cause only a few.

Many Sons and Many Daughters.

O Brahmin, if Simha happens to be Upa Pada and receives a Drishti from Chandra,

  • there will be a limited number of children.

Similarly Kanya

  • will cause many daughters.

31

Third and Eleventh from Lagna Pada

Siblings

Co-born from Lagna Pada (up to Shloka 36).

Rahu + Shani in the 3rd, or the 11th from Lagna Pada

  • will destroy the co-born of the native.

Rahu + Shani in the 11th

  • will indicate the destruction of elder brothers and/or sisters and in the 3rd younger ones.

32

Children

If Shukra is in the 3rd, or the 11th from Lagna Pada,

  • there would have been an abortion to the mother earlier.

Same is the effect, if Shukra is in the 8th from natal Lagna, or from Lagna Pada.

33-36.

(More) Siblings

These are the effects, O Brahmin, as stated by Maharishis for the 3rd and the 11th from Lagna Pada.

Should Chandra, Guru, Budha and Mangala be in the 3rd, or the 11th from Lagna Pada,

  •  there will be many valorous co-born.

Should Shani + Mangala be in the 3rd, or the 11th from Lagna Pada, or give Drishtis thereto,

  • younger and elder co-born will, respectively, be destroyed.

If Shani is alone in one of the said Bhavas,

  • the native will be spared, while the co-born will die.

Ketu in the 3rd, or the 11th

  • will give abundant happiness from one's sisters.

37- 43

Thieving

Spirituality

Kingship

Knowledge

Poetry

Wealth & Intelligence

Thieving (again)

Teeth

Stammering

Ugly

Other Matters from Lagna Pad (up to Shloka 43).

If the 6th from Lagna Pada is occupied by a malefic and is bereft of a Yuti with, or a Drishti from a benefic,

  • the native will be a thief.

If Rahu is in the 7th, or the 12th from Lagna Pada, or gives a Drishti to one of the said Bhavas,

  • the native will be endowed with spiritual knowledge and be very fortunate.

If Budha is in Lagna Pada,

  •  the native will Lord over a whole country,

while Guru (in Lagna Pada)

  •  will make him a knower of all things.

Shukra in this context

  • denotes a poet/speaker

(also see Chapter 29, verse 30).

O excellent of the Brahmins, if benefics occupy the 2nd from Upa Pada, or from Lagna Pada,

  • the native will be endowed with all kinds of wealth and be intelligent.

If the Lord of the 2nd from Upa Pada is in Dhana Bhava and is there yuti with a malefic Graha.

  • One will surely become a thief

O Brahmin, if Rahu is in the 2nd from the Lord of the 7th, counted from Upa Pada

  • the native will have long and projected teeth.

Ketu in the 2nd from the Lord of the 7th, counted from Upa Pada,

  • will cause stammering and

Shani in the 2nd from the Lord of the 7th, counted from Upa Pada,

  • will make one look ugly.

Mixed will be the effects, if there are mixed Grahas.

A-1: Arudha lagna / Lagna pada

  • ...reveals how Others perceive one's personality.  It shows how one projects one's own illusion or 'glamour' into the world.

  • If the lord of the arudha lagna is favorable, these projections are well received in the minds of others.

  • Famous persons and Entertainers frequently have highly favorable lords of A-1.

  • The lagna pada = arudha lagna is a good key to finding out how a person is perceived by the outside world.  While the lagna may give a good profile of physical appearance, the arudha lagna shows the native's psychic projection upon others - how the native strikes the minds of others.

  • If the arudha lagna is favorable, even a person with a poorly supported rashi lagna can be quite successful, getting job promotions & celebrity recognition etc. Arudha means illusion or image.

  • If the radix lagna itself is strong and vibrant but the lagna pada is weak, even quite a remarkably vital and attractive person will be missed by the public.

  • The more interesting cases are people who rather unaccountably become celebrities.  These folks experience their image being broadcast day and night over all media - their personal goings-on becomes of great interest to the common herd.  Such people frequent have a a powerful lagna-pada. Their celebrity periods, often flash-in-the-pan, are expected during the bhukti of their lord of lagna-pada, called the karakamsha.

  • Similarly, Dhana pada shows how others perceive one's wealth.

  • A person might be buried in consumer debt or paying huge medical loans or tax liens - but if A-2 is favorable, they could still be looking/acting wealthy.  A-2 which contrasts favorably with the realities of actual house-2 is common in westerners who become "house poor" after buying a home that is too expensive for their income, or folks who become "car poor" after buying a prestige vehicle that looks good but leaves them without grocery money!

  • And so forth for the other arudha lagnas.  Check for disparities, if the person seems to be faking it or living a lie of some type, you will see the gap between reality and illusion by checking the arudha lagna for the house in question.

A-7 Dara pada or kalatra pada shows the glamour or charm of the spouse's personality, what people think of one's husband or wife.

  • Perhaps the native has married a person of high moral caliber who nevertheless lacks some social graces.  The general public may, if the A-7 is poorly situated, have a lower opinion of such a spouse than is truly warranted - and the native may suffer on this account.

  • By contrast some people find it difficult to sue for divorce when, despite their deep unhappiness in their marriage, their spouse is well thought-of in their community.  This dilemma would also show up in the gap between A-7 and the reality of kalatra bhava and L-7.

  • "Dara" means "wife".  Darapada is the arudha lagna of the radix seventh house.  Darapada tells about the physical communion of the marriage, which is mainly the physical lovemaking.

  • Consideration of upapada and darapada are especially valuable for understanding the conditions applying in marriage and the behavior of the spouse.

The arudha lagnas of the bhavas reveal the illusions, or what the sleepwalking public believes, about the goings-on of the bhava.  One of the most important meanings of the dara-pada is therefore the illusory purpose of marriage which is physical sexuality.

Dara-pada can be analyzed to distinguish the physical dimension of marriage and describe how the spouse behaves physically (affectionate, passionate, or withholding, distant).  The physical dimension of marriage whilst often demeaned in body-reviling cultures as inferior or delusory, is in fact absolutely key to marital well-being.  There must be bona fide affection between the spouses in order for marriage to succeed.

    1. To find the dara-pada, count from yuvati bhava to the lord of yuvati.

    2. Then count the same number of houses forward again, to reach the dara-pada. (see example below)

    3. If L-7 is in swakshetra (his own house) then darapada = house-10.

    Darapada for second spouse

Darapada for the second spouse counts from dhana bhava to L-2.  Then count the same number of houses forward again, to reach the second-marriage dara-pada.

A-12 = Upa pada or Vyaya pada is the second-most-consulted arudha lagna.

A-12 shows the glamour or charm of the native's marriage, seen by the minds of others.  It shows what people believe about the native's marriage -- which may be quite different from what is really going on.

Nativities of politicians, business people, and others in public life who successfully project a loving marriage upon the public consciousness, frequently have a strong A-12.

Given the stresses of public life and a certain narcissism that accompanies iconic leadership positions, there is frequently a wide gap between illusion and reality for high-profile public figures.

Natives who enjoys a powerful upapada can make the public believe that everything is fine with his marriage, even when the partners are long separated.  According to Sanjay Rath, this native may announce his divorce long after a physical separation, in the period of 2nd-from-upapada.

Upapada is the arudha lagna of the twelfth house.  It shows the public impression of your marriage.

Consideration of upapada and darapada are especially valuable for understanding the dynamics of a marriage.  It is often said that Upa-pada represents "the institution of marriage" as practiced by the couple (with all the inherent conflict institutionalized into a stable format that Vyaya sthana being 6th-from-7th does imply).

To find the upa-pada, count the houses starting from vyaya bhava going forward to the twelfth-lord.  Then count the same number of houses forward again, to reach the upa-pada. (see example below)

(Married couples who are secretly miserable whilst enjoying a smooth public presentation, as is so common in the instrumental marriages of politicians and senior executives, will often display a successful upapada but trouble appears in darapada.)

Lagna padas are a component of the Jaimini system of Jyotisha.  While some purists say that Jaimini aspects & techniques should not be mingled with Parashari practices, many Parashari practitioners use Jaimini concepts like arudha lagna quite seamlessly, and with no problems.

(This debate is yet another ill effect of the medieval skewing of Jyotisha transmissions.  If the gods are with us many of these assertions shall be proven or disproven via modern textual research, within the next generation.)

arudha_samplechart.JPGNativity to the right shows Arudha lagnas, calculated for all 12 radix & navamsha houses.

The charts at right were produced using the *free* Jagannatha Hora software package, by Shri Narasimha Rao

Find arudha lagnas in this example radix:

LAGNA-PADA - L-1 Kuja occupies the 4th-house

  1. Count 4 houses from lagna to lagnesha = Kuja in bandhu bhava (4th).

  2. Then, starting in 4th-house, count again, 4 houses forward.

  3. Arrive in house-7. Yuvati bhava is the lagna-pada, so apply the jump-10-more rule:

  4. *If lagna-pada = house-7 (lagnesha in house-4 or house-10) the arudha lagna becomes house-4 = "AL"

UPAPADA = L-12 Shukra occupies the 8th-house

  • Count nine houses from vyaya bhava (12th) to L-12 Shukra, in randhra sthana (8th).

  • Then, starting in 8th-house, count again, nine houses forward.

  • Arrive in house-4. Bandhu bhava = upapada ="A-12" = "UL"

  • Lord of house-8 = uchcha Budha. In general, the public will have a favorable impression of the marriage.

DARA PADA = L-7 Shukra occupies house-8

  • Count two houses from yuvati bhava (7th) to randhra sthana (8th).

  • Then, starting in 8th-house, count forward two again

  • Arrive in dharma bhava, the 9th house.  Dharma sthana = darapada = "A-7"

  • Lord of Pitristhana = Chandra (who is favorably disposed in D-1 and lord of D-9).  In general, the public will have a favorable opinion of the spouse.

Darapada for 2nd marriage = L2 Guru occupies house-10:

  • Start in dhana bhava, the house of the 2nd spouse. Count nine houses from house-2 to house-10.

  • Then, restarting in karmaa bhava, count again nine houses forward.

  • Arrive in 6th-house.  Darapada for the second spouse is Ari Bhava.

  • Lord of Ari Bhava is Kuja.  Kuja is a complex graha in this nativity due to his unfavorable status in Shani's rashi, yet benefiting from parivartana with Shani and receiving the strengthening drishti from 2 friends Surya & Guru.

Therefore the public will perceive the 2nd spouse to be a complex person, a mix of favorable & unfavorable public opinion which varies according to the role the spouse is playing for the public, at the time.

If the 11th from the Lagna Pada is occupied or receives aspect from a planet the native will be happy and rich ... if the planet be in exaltation or own rashi, there will be plenty of gains and plenty of happiness. -- Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra Ch. 29, Shloka 8-11

When the 11th from arudha lagna has a planet or is aspected by a planet, the native becomes prosperous & wealthy.  -- Jaimini Sutram (Upadesha Sutra) 3rd pada/2

If the eleventh from arudha Lagna is well associated and aspected by benefics or those in exaltation, in Moola-Trikona and the like, the person has wealth through justifiable means."  -- Jaimini Sutram (Upadesha Sutra) Ch 1/Shloka 5

When the Moon, Jupiter, or Venus are in the second from arudha lagna, the native becomes prosperous and wealthy."   -- Jaimini Sutram (Upadesha Sutra)  Ch 1/Shloka 15

"When the arudha of the seventh house is in a

  • Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10)

  • trikona (1, 5, 9)

  • or upachaya (3, 10, 11)

from arudha lagna, there is compatibility and harmony between husband and wife."

~~ Jaimini Sutram (Upadesha Sutra) Chapter 1 Shloka 20

[BPL: the only disturbance to marital harmony occurs when arudha of the seventh house is in domain-2, 6, 8, or 12.]

If the arudha lagna and the arudha of the seventh (dara pada) are mutually in 6, 8, 12 houses, there can be no mutual harmony between husband and wife. They will always be inimical.

~~ Jaimini Sutram (Upadesha Sutra) Chapter 1 Shloka 21

If the Upapada or its second is one of the signs owned by Mercury, and if it is associated with Saturn and Mars, the wife (or the husband) suffers from nasal disorders like sinusitis and polyps.

~~ Jaimini Sutram (Upadesha Sutra) Chapter 1 Shloka 17

If Mercury and Venus are associated with the hora lagna, the daughter becomes passionate because of the desire for sex not being satisfied from her husband.

~~ Jaimini Sutram (Upadesha Sutra) Chapter 1 Shloka 41

Q: Namaskar.

I read the few texts of UL lord of Rashi from Shri Sanjay Rath's articles and other sources. Rule1: If Lord of UL is exalted in D-9 or Rashi it shows partner from high status family.

Rule 2: If Lord of UL is debilitated, in D-9 or Rashi, the partner comes from poor status.

In my case UL lord Venus (Libra) of Rashi is debilitated in D-9. What does it imply? I am bit confused by these Jaimini Sutras.

Also, if L-7 is considered or L-8 is considered they are exalted in rashi and D-9 respectively.

How to ascertain the difference from two techniques.?

A:

Namaste

The basis of both Parashari and Jaimini Jyotisha (which are complementary and not contradictory!) is the concept of the Karaka.

When looking for "implication" I.e. the spiritual, mental, emotional, or material effect of a karaka, I find it helpful to return to the original karaka.

The Upapada lagna is an expression of domain-12. Upa Pada Lagna = arudha of the radix 12th rashi. (In some traditions, UL is calculated from dhana bhava for even rashi radix lagna.)

Domain-12 represents the previous lifetime. The previous lifetime is not "finished". Like all other lifetimes past and present, the "previous" lifetime is ongoing in the astral plane, which is a world not controlled by time and space rules. There are no clocks on the astral plane, and there are no barriers or boundaries. On the astral plane, you can put your hand right through a steel wall, and there are no sequences such as before-and-after. Everything happens simultaneously.

(Domain-2 represents the next future lifetime.)

The UL represents those conditions carrying forward from previous lifetimes, which are extremely vivid memories stored in the subconscious. These memories are quite "near" or "close-by" (upa) and these memories or subconscious expectations manifest as the psychic influence of those who are close-by in our lives. Traditionally, the spouse is the 'closest person" in life, one's most intimate mirror. (But of course there are many exceptions to this tradition and some marriage partners are quite distant.) The spousal agreement was made on the astral plane a long time before the present lifetime, and the spouses know a great deal about each other's subconscious reality (not necessarily conscious knowledge, but intuitively one recognizes the spouse's imagination and understands their dreams often better than they do themselves.)

Vyaya bhava is the house of private imagination, meditative reflection, dreams, and foreign travel. It is the domain of the loss of separate physical identity, and the loss of social ego-recognition. It is that part of our lives conducted primarily during sleep, in the dream state, and of course the person 'closest' to one in the dream state is typically the adult spouse who is sleeping only inches away. What happens in domain-12 is that in the dream state, the native is traveling the pathways of the astral worlds. Dreams are active, dreams are busy, dreams are purposeful and informative -- for those who can read the dream information, anyway! And those who remember their dreams report that they "saw" their future spouse in their dreams (or waking meditations) whether that vision was a material form or a psychic vibration, perhaps a tone or a color-pattern. However for those who have an adequately sensitive perceptual apparatus that is focused on the radar screen of domain-12, pre-knowledge of soon-to-materialize persons and events is readily available.

So... just remember that the *baseline for interpretation of the UL* is domain-12 and its function in human life. In particular, the UL influences the manifestation of the Most Intimate Partner (the nearest one) but in general all of the near-by people, such as family members, essential teachers, romantic lovers, will all emerge from the subconscious programming established in the previous life. Look closely into the dream imagery and you will see that all these people are very familiar!

Pt. Narasimha Rao says "The second most important Arudha is the Upapada Lagna (the Arudha of the 12th house). Upa means near or relating to (as well as giving and ornament), and is calculated from the sign near and related to the lagna and shows the person who ends up near and relating to you." http://shrifreedom.org/jyotishArudhaUL.shtml

BPHS 13-22.

  • If a Graha being constant indicator of wife (i.e. the 7th Lord, or Shukra) is in its own Bhava,
  • there will be loss of wife only at a later stage.
  • If the Lord of Upa Padaa, or the constant significator of wife, is in exaltation, the wife will be from a noble family. [BPL note: 'constant significator of wife' = Shukra]
  • Reverse will be the case, if the lord is debilitated.
  • O Brahmin, if the 2nd from Upa Padaa is related to a benefic,
  • the wife will be beautiful, fortunate and virtuous.
  • Should Shani + Rahu be in the 2nd from Upa Padaa,
  • the native will lose his wife on account of calumny, or through death.
  • if Shukra + Ketu are in the 2nd from Upa Padaa,
  • the native's wife will be troubled by disorder of blood, leucorrhoea (Pradar) etc.
  • Budha + Rahu in the 2nd from Upa Pad
  • will give a stout-bodied wife.
  • If the 2nd from Upa Padaa happens to a rashi of Budha and is tenanted by Mangala + Shani,
  • the wife of the native will suffer from nasal disorders.
  • Similarly a Rashi of Mangala, becoming the 2nd from Upa Padaa and occupied by Mangala + Shani,
  • will cause nasal disorders to one's wife.
  • Guru + Shani will, if be in the 2nd from Upa Pad,
  • cause disorders of ears and/or eyes to the wife.
  • If Budha + Mangala are placed in the 2nd from Upa Padaa other than a rashi of Budha or Kuja, or, if Rahu + Guru in the 2nd from Upa Padaa,
  • the native's wife will suffer from dental disorders.
  • Shani + Rahu together in a rashi of Shani, which is the 2nd from Upa Pada,
  • will cause lameness, or windy disorders to the native's wife.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These evils will not come to pass,

  • if a benefic is Yuti,
  • or a Drishti from a benefic,
  • or from another benefic in the case of affliction being caused by a benefic himself.

What is the basis of these claims from Parashara?

The UL = the arudha, or public-perceived aura, of the lord of the twelfth house (vyaya pathi) . The UL is generating a perceptual veil or Maya which gives a particular appearance to the public audience regarding "those who are near one".

The nearest, most intimate ones for the child are members of one's family of origin. In adult life, the nearest one is traditionally the spouse. But if the marriage is not functioning well, one's psychic "nearness" to one's own family remains much more clear & vivid than one's comprehension of the spouse... Anyway, family of origin are the "nearest ones" either previous to marriage or sometimes for the duration of the life.

Therefore, one of the results we can assess from the quality of the UL, is a measurement of the public aura surrounding the birth (or adoptive) family.

2nd-from-UpaPada = the public perception of the death of the Near One /wealth of the Near One / face of the Near One / family-of-origin of the Near One.

If all this reasoning about arudha lagna holds true (and I believe it does when properly understood on the basis of domain-12) then the disposition of the UL in D-1 and D-9 should give a reading on the public perception of the *social rank and appearance* of one's "near ones" or intimates. These intimates include one's family of origin, one's spouse, and anyone else whom one would sleep with.

(BTW, to get accurate results it is necessary to avoid cultural prescription approved sleeping partners. We have to stick to the signification of "near one". If the native is sleeping with someone who is not family or spouse, then UL refers to that unconventional "near one" also.)

Thus if UL = an uchcha graha, the (public imagery of the) social rank of the spouse is exalted, I.e., from a noble family.

If the UL = a neechcha graha, the (public imagery of the) social rank of the spouse is debilitated, I.e., from a poor family.

---------------------------------------

To calculate the UL from odd rashi radix lagna, start counting from vyaya bhava To calculate the UL from even rashi radix lagna, start counting from dhana bhava

Why do we put so much emphasis on Arudha positions? Can't we judge accurately from radix and navamsha directly?

Yes and no.

Yes for a few people, no for most people.

Most people are extremely vulnerable to public opinion. Most people have weak boundaries between True Self (atma) which is the direct expression of Divine Law, and False Self which is the ego-shell created to deal with Human Law and the Material World: that is, the physical body & the social personality with all of its rank/entitlement functions.

Most people are not aware that they are being 24/7 bombarded with the uncontrolled stream of imagery from everyone & everything in their environment, including the electronic media. Therefore most people live their lives in a state of false consciousness, which is actually a rather unhappy state, functioning as nothing more than the sum total of all that swirling, attacking, saturating, environmental imagery... and those people ARE their arudhas.

Some people have better boundary skills. Some people can distinguish between imagery flowing from one's own dharmic awareness, I.e., leading toward personal manifestation of divine law, versus the random storming imagery of the beings in one's environment. (Including beings who do not have human bodies, I.e. spirits.) For these people, public opinion is of relatively little consequence. These people are best described by D-9, and one of the signature features of this type of Jyotisha nativity is that there is a strong correlation between D-1 and D-9, usually with abundance of vargottama graha and compatible rashis on the trine points. But don't be tricked into thinking that these rare folk who are following a dharmic path are all "good" people. They are not concerned so much with human law, they are following a loud clarion call from the divine, and what they are doing while not being much influenced by the imagery of meddlesome Others may look from the point of view of Human Law as immoral or even terribly, unspeakably wrong. The nativities of several brutally murderous dictators from the 20th century attest to this fact.

In any case, the individuals who are less vulnerable to having one's experiences in life directed or even defined by other people's imagery/thoughts/expectations/projections are extremely rare. Normal people, sleepwalking through their existence, grasp for material acquisitions and sensual pleasure (Shukra), gasp, and die. Their lives are easy to track and easy to predict. They are very much the product of their arudhas. And their marriage is very much defined by the UpaPada Lagna.

from : B.V. Raman, A Catechism of Astrology. part I, p. 64

"Q. 77    --What are the different kinds of Arudhas ?

Ans.

Jaimini emphasizes 12 Arudhas :Lagna Arudha, Dhana-arudha, Vikram-arudha etc.. . one for each Bhava. Arudhas are to be determined as follows :

Note where the lord of the ascendant stands and count as many signs from this Rasi as the ascendant lord is removed from the ascendant.

  • The Rasi so got is Arudha or Pada or Lagna Arudha.

Similarly note where the lord of 2 is from the 2nd house and the number of Rasis passed by him. Calculate the same number from the Rasi occupied by the lord of 2.

  • The Rasi so got is Dhana Arudha.

In the same way work for other 'houses' and we get

  • Vikrama Arudha (3rd).

  • Matru Arudha (4th),

  • Santana Arudha (5th),

  • Vyadhi Arudha (6th),

  • Bharya Arudha (7th),

  • Niryana Arudha (8th),

  • Bhagya Arudha (9th),

  • Karma Arudha (10th),

  • Labharudha (11th) and

  • Upapada or Vyaya Arudha (12th). "
