Overall however, IMO, the balance of factors involving Shukra does not justify The cookbook recommendation to always wear the ratna of the bhukti-pati during its bhukti.
Note that due to potential career-reputation benefits attending the ruler of karma bhava, there are exceptions for the usual proscription against wearing Zukra-ratna when Simha governs the lagna; however, these specific Shukra exceptions *do not apply* in your nativity.

In Jyotisha as in all matters of philosophical thought, the ultimate decision should honor your intuition (inner teaching). If you feel strongly, intuitively that Zukra-ratna can bring you some benefits, I recommend to try wearing a diamond (properly applied) and see what happens.
Remember that Jyotisha ratna do not cause any action. Pure gems are capable of stimulating the existing flow of psychic energy which originates in one's own thoughts. Even the lower-quality non-conducting gems can serve as effective mental reminders to follow through on one's higher intentions.

Q: Upon which finger should I place the Zukra-ratna? You mention both the ring finger and the middle finger.
Shukra ratna (diamond) can be placed on either the Shani finger or the Budha finger.
If you choose to pair the diamond with an emerald for Budha, place these two stones in a setting of silver or platinum on the little finger.
If you choose to pair the diamond with a blue sapphire for Shani, place these two stones in a setting of silver or platinum on the longest finger, digit 3. 1- thumb 2- first - Mangala-or-Surya 3- longest finger - Shani the Elder profession - can add Shukra OK 4- ring finger (in western culture, diamond wedding rings = 4, but in eastern system 4 is a guru or surya finger) - Guru-Surya 5 - little finger - Budha the Youth - can add Shukra OK (Rahu or Ketu ratna have to be placed on the finger of their respective lord)

Pearl generally is easier to wear in a pendant because of its shape, but it is OK on the right hand as well.
I have received two gem prescription that tell me to combine pearl with diamond.

Every time I chant the mantra and apply my beautiful new platinum-setting diamond (which was by the way quite expensive) my relationship bursts into conflict. I've tried to put on my new diamond three times now. Each time, we have conflict. Is it the right finger? Vrishabha lagna with Chandra in Krittika in the first house. I'm also preparing to purchase a blue sapphire for Shani -- but I'm concerned now. Will a neelam make things worse?

The finger placement is correct and it sounds like a quality diamond. If there is conflict associated with wearing a Jyotisha remedial Diamond, that conflict is not"caused" by the azira (diamond). The underlying thoughts and emotional reactions have been there all along. A good quality and size of Jyotisha gemstone can have psychic transmitting capabilities which emphasize the subtle thoughts and bring those thoughts to the surface of consciousness.
Presently Professor Shani is transiting your sixth bhava, also ruled by Shukra. Also, you are presently in the Rahu-Budha bhukti of the Vimshottari dasha which is a powerful energizer of Rahu in bhava-2; that period can signal breakups caused by the presence of"someone else". These are only possibilities in your personal drama script -

I've just entered the Zukra Mahadasha, Shukra occupies vriddhisthana, and I was told by an astrologer that I should wear azira to increase work promotion and raise the paycheck.
I know you recommend Ruby-Munga-Pukhraj -- but what about a Diamond during the Zukra Mahadasha. I'm in my thirties and these upcoming 20 years are my best chance for career success.
Zukra-ratna is in my opinion unsuitable for the Simha lagna nativity since Shukra is an enemy of the lagnesha Lord Ravi.
Neither diamond, nor emerald, nor blue sapphire may be worn with the gems which benefit this Simha nativity.
In order to strengthen a particular bhava, if the gem is not suitable to the nativity, Seva should be used rather than wearing contradictory gems.
Therefore, if finances allow and so long as the current bhukti period is friendly to Surya, Guru, and Mangala, yellow sapphire may be applied first.
