| Q: I'm ready to buy a red coral on your recommendation. |
However, I'm wondering about correct shape (cabochon, triangular, oblong) and color.
There seem to be many choices in color ranging from deep red to pink, and some of the stones are"striated" showing stripes of red, pink, white and various layers of coral. I presume that the stripes comes from generations of skeleton bones compressed into a single stone?
I've read that"oxblood" which is a deep red color is the preferred hue for Moonga. But the vendors show a full range of redish-pinkish-whitish. Clearly people are buying other hues, not only the 'oxblood'.
Also I wonder about the size of the ratna. I want to wear mine as a pendant. (I work in a US corporate office and a flashy red-gold ring is not appropriate here.) If I wear it under my clothing, to touch the skin as you have recommended, then I could manage a fairly large stone . Although the gold setting will be pricey and a bit heavy too, I think I will go with a 2-inch diameter. However I've seen tiny little moonga stones for sale, and I wonder if these can be effective? (I'd guess that these little ones are for rings, maybe mixed with other ratna?)
Thanks Barbara for all that you offer to the Jyotish learning community. As a fellow educator (I'm a corporate trainer) I salute you!

The shape of the moonga-ratna is usually chosen by the jewel-cutter. The jeweler will see the structure of the stone and decide the how to best develop its integrity (will not break) and beauty (will radiate best color and brightness).
More important than shape or color is your feeling of attunement with the ratna. How does the ratna feel when you hold it in the palm of your hand?
If the ratna is active and attuned to you, the feeling should be slightly positive physically: warm, perhaps a bit of tingling, and emotionally the feeling is positive emotionally: yes, this stone is attuned to me, it is a good companion for me, I like it.
Stones are actually not inert; they have a crystalline structure which conducts energy, and the most energetic of the Jyotisha traditional ratna is Moonga * red coral – because the coral was historically a living animal (animal = spirit).
A quality-cut, natural (no resin, no plastic) attuned-to-you Moonga can assist in confirming your decisions when you are moving quickly through life.
Moonga people are usually quite active people and they recognize the support from this ratna as confirming their intuitions. Ratna do not provide "luck” in the superstitious sense.
Actually "luck” is a form of intelligence that is essentially "attunement” harmony between intuition and outer action.
A good Moonga should feel good in your hand. It should feel as if it has a slightly warm, compatible vibration. If you listen deep within yourself, you also can hear a quiet clear matching ‘tone'emanating from the ratna that sounds pleasant and harmonious in your inner world.
Interestingly, a sensitive person can use and appreciate even quite small ratna gemstones. A very small ratna must be individually skillfully cut and not just a 'chip' from another larger cut. But if done well and if the person is a careful interior listener, even a little ratna in a pure gold setting can be a working repeater of the intuitive signals. We are receiving signals constantly from a host of guides who silently and persistently direct and support us.

all-red bloodstone * heliotrope
two pebbles of Mangala-uparatna = polished carnelian = cornelian = sard
Purchase NOTE: While less expensive than many of the harder crystalline gems, Pure Coral is especially tricky to purchase, because the stone is frequently dyed or filled with resin.
Be sure to purchase only an authenticated coral provided by a certified gemologist, who can affirm that any cracks in the Coral have not been filled with resin.
Dr. G.S. Kapoor. (1994). Gems and Astrology .
Ranjan Publications, New Delhi. p. 95-99:
" Red Coral is the gem stone of Mars.
Coral should be worn by a person in whose birth chart Mars rules an auspicious house.
If Mars rules the inauspicious house in a birth chart, it will be harmful for the native to wear Red Coral.
Red Coral is not a very costly stone and we should recommend that for remedial purposes only the Red Coral should be used.
Its substitutes, however, are Sang Moongi, Carnelian and Red Jasper. Carnelian is the best substitute. It is cheap and easily available.
For all remedial gemstones, be sure to cleanse the stone energetically with extreme attention to proper mantra.
Flawless gems are expensive and hard to find. Use only a trusted Vedic-trained gemologist. It might be easiest to start with single gem and combine them as your finances allow.
According to Dr. G.S. Kapoor (1994, p 91)
|Q: OK, I'm in the Mangala Mahadasha and I just bought a beautiful red coral set in copper + gold. When should I put it on?|| A : Any Tuesday during the waxing moon. Time = 1 hour after sunrise. At the time of application, chant the Mangala mantra"Om Ang Angarakaya Namah " 108 repetitions and then apply the ring or pendant . |
In my opinion, a Mangala-related act of compassionate service is also an excellent way to initiate the Jyotisha remedial Munga.
for example, to get your Munga started at a high vibration:
| Q: Question from Simha-lagna native with Makara-Chandra in bhava-6. Mangala = Mithuna-11. |
First priority at the time of the question was to improve his job situation, in particular his earnings, in order to achieve greater material security for his family.
The"fire trine" lagnas * Mesha-Simha-Dhanusha * nearly always benefit from wearing one or more of the gems for the fire trine: flawless red coral + ruby + yellow sapphire .
In the present nativity, Mangala = Yogakaraka L-4+dharmesha-9 from the Simha lagna * and * L-4+Vriddhipathi-11 from Chandra.
Furthermore, Mangala occupies Mithuna in the 11th = a good position for Kuja, who expresses Active, competitive, dynamic energy in the marketplace of goods and ideas. Mangala's hot, pursuing nature, channeled through conversational Mithuna, will energize gainful activities.
the native should take care with the potentially aggressive Mangala-ratna. Watch, under the auspice of a gem-empowered Kuja, that one does not overshoot the desired target of energized marketplace interactions, to become overly chatty, mentally driven, or impatient.
In lieu of munga, SEVA will also give identical - often superior - results.
A : Namaste,
Delighted to know that you are enjoying the Gem Recommendation.
The best choice for a single gem would be Mangala-ratna = munga= flawless red coral. As your financial situation improves, the munga can later be joined to a flawless Manika (Ruby) set in gold.
To maximize the positive effect of the munga, even if you are able to obtain and wear a quality specimen, I would recommend doing a small amount of charity work serving very young men or older boys in high school or university. You can earn a good deal of positive merit but helping young male trainees to learn marketplace communication skills such as sales, advertising, marketing, public relations, and other types of commercial administration.
Mithuna = commerce; Mangala = competitive young men; bhava-11 (labha) = mentoring, the elder brother.
One possible way to energize the munga effects = through tutoring or mentoring adolescent students in business subjects. You can certainly be paid for the work, it does not have to be free volunteering.
But even if you are paid, it is the spiritual commitment to serve those younger people via a mentor role that brings the merit .
Seva helps the munga to improve its performance as a signal-repeater, by reinforcing your subconscious attunement to the theme of"advancing goals " .
