If Rahu occupies any other bhava, no matter how good Rahu's ruler , it is recommended to wear the gemstone of Rahu's ruler (when possible) but not Gomedha.

  • A sacrificial animal, victim; an animal-sacrifice, offering, oblation, any sacrifice

  • A cow-sacrifice

Zircon Crystal Model from

Gomedha is usually translated as cow urine, since the color of the crystal for Rahu is supposed to resemble the color of the urine of the sacred kine.

  • However medha is not really the word for 'urine' (meha = urine).

  • Medha connotes the ritually powerful essence of the remains of a sacrificed animal. sustaining juice

  • In context, cow's urine may be religiously interpreted as being a nourishing drink that is provided by the beast as a sacrificial offering to the recipient.

The distinction is important in developing an understanding of the sacrificial transformative powers of Rahu-Ketu.

Normally, kamakaraka Rahu's hungry desire impulse tends to torture a person. One finds that ambitious craving for a certain entitlement rather permanently exceeds the ability to retain it. Rahu wants more and more. The more He obtains, the less He perceives Himself to retain.

The chalakaraka is never satisfied since His nature is forever striving, knocked back when His fraudulence is discovered, then coiled up waiting for His next opportunity (11), then attempt again with renewed desire. And so it goes for the Naga King.

However, Rahu is said to be able to materialize tangible results when He resides in bhava-3, bhava-6, bhava-10 and bhava-11. True to His unsatisfiable nature, Rahu cannot be satisfied with these results on any sort of a permanent basis.

However according to traditional principles, the Rahu-ratna may help to sustain the hungry desire for special importance and privilege despite setbacks, and to improve His ascension-to-entitlement strategy over time (upachaya style).

Gomedha may be prescribed for Rahu the Rakshasa in 3-6-10-11 ,

  • after careful examination of the nativity and caveat emptor advice to the native, it is agreed that amplifying the hungry ambitions is desirable,

  • and that getting into a bit of bad company during the striving is just a normal part of Rahu's behaviors

  • The Faustian Bargain qualities of Rahu the Evil Twin of Zukra are understood.

Even so, think twice about wearing a Gomedha or a Vaidurya, since these psychic amplifiers can generate considerable discontent.

High Caution often applies with Rahu the Rogue!

Boyhood portrait of England-King 1491-1547 Henry VIII Tudor , born 1491. Note the chain of Baltic Amber = Rahu-ratna. Henry's Rahu-Vrizchika was ruled by his Mangala-2-Kanya in 11th-from-Rahu in political uttaraphalguni-pada-2.

Rahu means Mixed and Mottled. Baltic Amber is a "mixed" hard resin which shows fossilized material.

The ratna seeker should be advised that:

  • while extra-ordinary and sometimes quite spectacular, Rahu's achievements are typically not sustainable after the Rahu period has finished.

  • There must be another true-deity graha (not Rahu, not Ketu) available by strength and by timing to sustain by genuine stepwise earnings the higher rank and recognition that Rahu has so quickly obtained.

If the ephemeral nature of Rahu the Schemer's accomplishments is understood, Hessonite Garnet set in Gold may be prescribed as an instrument of:

  • empowerment for taking risks ,

  • internationalization and globalization

  • quick, albeit unearned, ascendance to higher social rank and recognition

  • energizing the intensity and range of ambitions and desires,

  • success in taboo-breaking or non-customary endeavors

  • breaking into the ranks of exclusive or privileged social groups

  • pyramid schemes, Ponzi schemes, school-exam grades via money-bribery, false educational diploma,

  • other quick-but-not-legitimately-earned methods of treasury-build and attainment of social-material "image"

Dr. G. S. Kapoor. (1994). Gems and Astrology . Ranjan Publications, New Delhi. p. 83:

"Wearing of an unblemished Gomedha ensures the native safety and protection from deadliest of the enemies.

  • Gomedha bestows health, wealth and prosperity to its owner.

  • At the time of hunting wild animals it acts as a protective armour.

  • It is a very helpful stone for warriors in the battlefield .

  • It is believed that keeping Gomedha in the mouth stops bleeding.

A blemished gem stone proves very harmful to the wearer.

The one of red colour is injurious to health

and that with the mixture of mica destroys wealth."

Dr. G. S. Kapoor. (1994). Gems and Astrology . Ranjan Publications, New Delhi. p. 121:

" The Gomedha should be worn in the middle finger or little finger in a ring of Ashta Dhatu

  • (alloy of eight metals or silver if Ashta Dhatu is difficult to get)

  • before Sunset on a Wednesday evening

  • After observing the usual rituals and reciting the following mantra 108 times:

Aum ram ravahe namah

  • The weight of the gem stone should not be less than six carats.

  • As far as possible genuine Sri Lanka Gomedha (of Zircon group) should be used.

  • Substitute is Hessonite Garnet."

For all remedial gemstones, be sure to cleanse the stone energetically with extreme attention to proper mantra.

Flawless gems are expensive and hard to find. Use only a trusted Vedic-trained gemologist. It might be easiest to start with single gem and combine them as your finances allow.

According to Dr. G.S. Kapoor (1994, p 91)

  • " It is very important for all gem stones that before wearing them they should be kept immersed for sometime in unboiled milk or Ganges water.

  • Afterwards the stones should be worshipped with flowers and incense, and the Mantras of the planets should be recited 108 times."

An assortment of opinions about Rahu-Ketu, their results and their associations:

QUOTATION from ~~ Dr. G. S. Kapoor. (1994). Gems and Astrology . Ranjan Publications, New Delhi. p. 118-120:

Rahu and Ketu are shadowy planets and are not lords of any signs of the zodiac.

[according to R-K ruler]

According to Dr. B. V. Raman (vide 'Hindu Predictive Astrology')

  • "Rahu and Ketu are aprakash Graha or lustreless planets and they give the results of the lords of the houses they occupy". Therefore, if Rahu or Ketu occupies a house the lord of which is an auspicious planet in a birth chart and is well placed in it, Rahu or Ketu will give good results of that planet. In such circumstances it will be beneficial for the native to wear a Gomedha for Rahu or Cat's Eye for Ketu in their major and sub-periods. "

[according to house 3-6-11]

  • "In spite of the fact that Rahu and Ketu do not own any signs, they have been treated as full-fledged planets by almost all of our ancient authorities (except Varaha Mihir) and they have held that Rahu and Ketu act differently in different houses of the horoscopes. "
  • "According to Phaladeepika , Rahu and Ketu being first class malefics give adverse effects in all houses except the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses . "
  • "The favourable effects in these three houses have been described as: Rahu in the 3rd, 6th and 11th makes the native honoured, wealthy and long-lived. "
  • Ketu in the 3rd makes the native long-lived, strong, wealthy and renowned.

  • "In the 6th, Ketu makes the native generous, full of praiseworthy qualities, firm, famous and conqueror of enemies. "

  • "In the 11th Ketu gives the native wealth, good qualities, all sorts of luxuries and comforts and success in all his ventures."

  • "In view of the circumstances explained above Gomedha for Rahu and Cat's Eye for Ketu should be worn in the major period and concerned planet if either of them is posited in the 3rd, the 6th or the 11th house in a birth chart. "

"According to Brihat Parashara Hora (translation by Pt. Sita Ram Jha) Rahu is exalted in Taurus and Ketu is exalted in Scorpio. "

  • "Therefore, if an exalted Rahu or Ketu is posited in a quadrant or trine and its dispositor Venus or Mars is an auspicious planet for the concerned birth chart and if well disposed, Rahu and Ketu will give very beneficial results.

  • Consequently Gomedha for Rahu and Cats Eye for Ketu should be worn in the major or sub- periods of these planets if they are so disposed.

According to Laghu Parashari and Uttara Kalamrit , Rahu and Ketu function as Yogakaraka s in a birth chart [...]

[Laghu Parashari ] According to Dewan Ram Chandra, the famous and learned translator and comment commentator of 'Laghu Parashari', this sloka should be [understood to mean]:

  • if Rahu or Ketu is posited in a trine with the lord of a quadrant,

  • or in a quadrant with the lord of a trine,

  • they become Yogakaraka.

[Uttara Kalamrit]

  • if Rahu and Ketu occupy dual signs

  • and if in these signs Rahu or Ketu are conjoined with lords of quadrant or trine houses,

  • the native will, during the Dasha periods of Rahu and Ketu, get wealth, power etc.

This means

  • if the two nodes (Rahu and Ketu) and the lord of a trine are posited in 9th or 10th,

  • or if one of them is in the 9th and the other in the 10th or vice versa.

  • the yoga will cause prosperity to the native .

  • Even a conjunction of either of these with the lord of a quadrant will prove beneficial.

  • In the above circumstances, the Dashas of these two nodes as well as joined with them will prove happy.

  • If there be a planet who is inauspicious associated I with either of the nodes, then the sub-period of the yoga-producing-planet will be adverse.

It will be very beneficial to It will be very beneficial to wear Gomedha for Rahn and Cat's Eye for Ketu in their major and sub-periods if they become Yogakaraka planets in the circumstances explained above. "

Q: In the kundali I have the Raghula in rashi of Ravi in the karmasthana. Some astrologers have recommended a large gomedha to advance my career. It is true that I am interested in politics and I have longtime feeling to help the lowest peoples in some way.

Along with Rahu are Guru, Shani, and Chandra all in the house of karma. According to you, this is the house of leadership and social responsibilities. It seems like Rahu can make problems for me, through association with the lower persons. As you might guess my mother has some mental illness.

What do you think about a Gomedha for me?

A: Professor Rahu can produce comfortable and pleasing results in upachaya bhava 3, 6, 10, or 11

For the Vrizchika lagna nativity, Gomedha is recommended *optionally* during the Rahu mahadasha and the Guru mahadasha. However, Gomedha must be chosen consciously

If you choose to wear the Gomedha, remove gomedha during mahadasha of Shani and Mahadasha of Budha. Gomedha can however be worn during Mahadasha of Ketu.

If you choose to wear the gomedha, remove all other gems and concentrate only on the gomedha s signal which supports the agency of dramatic unconventional charismatic actions in leadership and social regulatory placements.

Gomedha is only for the adventurous and only for those who fundamentally embrace a lifestyle of challenge to the social order and personal risk.

Gomedha can help to publicize (10) your political ambitions (Rahu) as a champion of the downtrodden and ostracized classes. However gomedha can also bring emotional instability (eclipse of Moon).

For you with Chandra-yuti-Rahu, there is lifetime emotional volatility caused by strong ambitions. You could choose to amplify the ambitions for material results or you could choose not to amplify in order to optimize Chandra's natural ability to produce rhythmic calmness in life. (For Chandra's natural calming purpose, the Pearl is more helpful).

Ruby * manika = for strengthening karmesha-10 Surya will indirectly fortify Rahu as well.

Wishing you every happiness, healing from sorrow, guidance by inner light, and success in all of life's endeavors,

Q: Namaste Barbara,

I have Rahu in satkona which according to you is (or can be) a supportive placement. Should I wear a Gomedha?

A: Namaste

Gomedha can be worn to support ambitious ministries of service when Rahu occupies bhava-6.

Flawless Vedic Gomedha hessonite garnet for Rahu = supports Rahu-6 in exotic, risky undertakings such as unconventional medications or chemical pollutants, or social service work with marginalized or stigmatized persons.

  • An interesting example of a successful Rahu-6 is Syriana 1961- drama-activist George Clooney, who uses his celebrity in a positive humanistic way to call attention to the plight of war refugees in Darfur. This compassionate action involves him with disease, violence, and hideous crimes, but he is not personally a victim. Mr. Clooney can wear Gomedha during his Rahu Mahadasha if he chooses.

Your Rahu mahadasha occurs during age 81-99. At that dignified age, you may be able to engage in irregular social behaviors (such as affiliation with marginalized peoples or diseases) in order to do good in this world.

If you are inclined toward compassionate service with a victim population, Rahu-6 can be a supportive placement.

However, all diamond, emerald, and blue sapphire must be removed during the time of wearing the hessonite quartz Gomedha.

I have contacted Bill Kent in regards to the hessonite who suggested that Saturday is the appropriate time to set the gem in the pendant.

In your report you recommended it to be worn on Wednesday, however based on my research it would seem that Saturday is the appropriate day.

A: Namaste

Hessonite quartz or Orange Zircon (Gomedha) for Rahu

Instructions =

- Set in silver.

- Place on the second finger of right hand, on a Saturday.

- Chant Rahu mantra = Aum ram ravahe namah * Repeat 18 times

According to Dr. G.S. Kapoor in"Gems and Astrology" Ranjan Pub., Delhi. 1994, p 121:

  • "... The Gomedha should be worn in the middle finger or little finger

  • in a ring of Ashta Dhatu (alloy of eight metals or silver if Ashta Dhatu is difficult to get)

  • before Sunset on a Wednesday evening after observing the usual rituals and reciting the mantra 108 times.

  • The weight of the gem stone should not be less than six carats.

  • As far as possible genuine Sri Lanka Gomedha (of Zircon group) should be used. Substitute is Hessonite Garnet."

Confusing isn't it: Wednesday or Saturday ?

Authorities vary.

  • if Rahu occupies swabhava of Budha (3 or 6) apply Gomedha on a Wednesday (budhabaara).
  • if Rahu occupies swabhava of Shani (10 or 11) apply Gomedha on a Saturday (sanibaara).

Some other variations include:

  • 108 repetitions of the Rahu mantra vs 18 initiating repetitions
  • IMO: do 108

Rahu-Ketu are relatively"new" in the historic Jyotisha literary tradition.

  • Whereas mention of the seven classical planets (with great emphasis upon Chandra) are present in the Atharva Veda and other writings in vaidik-Sanskrit, Rahu-Ketu appear only in about 600 CE in the works attributed to Varaha Mihira.

  • It is not clear where the Rahu-Ketu traditions originate culturally or literarily.

  • Lacking an ancient source, Rahu-Ketu interpretations generated since the middle ages have spanned a wide range of understanding.

Most commentators subscribe to the tradition of Rahu-Shani = co-rulers of Kumbha rashi. These authorities liken Rahu to Shani.

However some traditions ascribe Budha's traits to Rahu. Budha and Rahu have some similarities, for example both share animosity to Chandra.

  • Furthermore, some authorities ascribe the qualities of Mangala to Professor Rahu , largely because of Rahu's conquesting vitality and His invasive behaviors. These commentators reverse the general opinion that Ketu-Mangala are a Vrischika-ruling pair while Rahu-Shani are the Kumbha-ruling pair. The commentators who claim that Rahu most resembles Mangala would say the Rahu-naga is the great transformative tantriki and therefore it is Rahu not Ketu who rules Vrizchika the rashi of sudden, forced changes.

  • IMO: choose the initiating day according Rahu's bhava.

In agreement with master Jyotisha gemologist Bill Kent, traditional application of Gomedha = Saturday. A Saturday initiation of Rahu's entry into the psychic network is in keeping with the mainstream understanding of Rahu's effects best resembling Shani which is very consistent with Professor Shani along with Professor Rahu as joint co-rulers of Kumbha. Thus Rahu-ratna can always be set and applied on Shani's day. But IMO Wednesday is OK too for Rahu in bhava-3 or Rahu in bhava-6.

Wishing you every happiness, healing from sorrow, guidance by inner light, and success in all of life's endeavors,
