The English word LAPIS is from Latin LAPIS meaning STONE (e.g., lapidary)
The English term Lapis-Lazuli meaning a particular pyrite blue-stone derives from Lapis + the Greek-Arab-Persian word Lajward, which was the Persian name of the blue-stone quarry in Turkia. The English color-name AZURE comes from the Persian lajward.
