Public Life

• Carter's pre-presidential life as a military submarine commander, agribusiness peanut farmer, and governor of Georgia  received more public approval than his presidency. 

• Jimmy Carter endured what many consider a "failed" presidency, 1976-1980.

• His post-presidential life as an international democratic elections supervisor and icon of the famed "Habitat for Humanity" along with other charitable and  religious leadership activities, continues to receive tremendous public respect. 

Thula predominates = Leadership

• Material Wealth is not at all luxurious but rather quite modest.

• The nativity features a number of fine dhana yogas. Indeed, Mr. Carter and his family have everything they need to enjoy life, and to dress appropriately for the state dinners required for his work.

• Mr. Carter is a very prominent and well-networked person, who has no doubt encountered many opportunities to gain personal wealth. Yet his lifestyle does not include conspicuous consumption, and his personal property equates to the American middle class average.

• Shukra = "double L-8" for Carter's double Thula nativity, and Shukra-11 = weak in enemy's rashi Simha while Shukra's lord Surya is also weak in 12.

• Shani is also strong in dashamsha, which is confirming -- to the extent that we can rely upon a somewhat general birth time (0700).

• Combined with L-10 Moon boosting career, this is a destined-for-greatness chart with certain prominent weaknesses.

• Yogakaraka Sasya Yoga gives public dignity and a lifelong quest for social justice. Shani also creates Sasya Yoga in D-10

• Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 =

  • Surya/Rahu period

  • -- Shani casts the 10th drishti upon Rahu,

  • and Rahu occupies 10th-from-Chandra

  • while Chandra = lord of 10th-from-Lagna AND 10th-from-Chandra.

Chandra

This man is very much a product of the women around him.

• L4-Shani/Chandra yoga shows a fiercely ambitious, organized, and pro-education mother.  

• Chandra/Shani drishti to yuvati bhava indicates a similar conservative, caring determination in the character of the spouse.

• "... is very auspicious, bestowing much honor, power and leadership, high status, wealth, extensive renown and social leadership to you who are exceptionally gifted.

• You may indulge in a tawdry or socially unacceptable relationship or covet another's' spouse or wealth and suffer humiliation and loss of prestige at some time or other."

Vimshottari Dasha Narrative:

L-4/L-5 yogakaraka Shani Mahadasha - age 13-32 -- foundations

•  Carter was too young to distinguish himself professionally during Shani mahadasha. Yet, education was obtained during the period of uchcha L-4, which granted him a quality of preparatory and university study far beyond the standard for his folk (4). Carter's core religious values, education, intelligence, and superior work ethic were undoubtedly shaped during this foundational period. 

• Because Ketu occupies Makara in radix, Ketu will later carry out the excellent directive of hard-working, justice-serving Shani - when Carter is in his 50's.

L-9/L-12 Mercury Mahadasha - age 32-49

• Mercury is a good planet for Carter because of Simha-Budha's helpful parivartamsha yoga with Kanya-Surya.  He got into local politics early in Mercury's period. 

• Elected to the Georgia state senate in 1962 under Budha/Shukra.  Budha is very articulate from the parivartan, and a great networker being in labha bhava the house of associations, whilst Shukra is the charismatic, self-promoting lagnesha that does the bidding of Budha who has the superior degree.

• He lost a campaign for governor of Georgia in 1966 under Budha/Kuja perhaps due to temporarily harsh speech under the Mars bhukti.  

• But Mercury really is a good planet, and Carter was elected governor of Georgia in Nov. 1970 under Budha/Guru. Guru as L3-L6 is not a good planet for Carter, and his governorship might have gone poorly if Guru's effects had lasted.  

• However, within the year Budha/Shani period started, bringing all the excellent communicative benefits of a 3/11 angle from a parivartamsha mahadasha-pati onto the uchcha Shani.

Ketu Mahadasha - age 49-56

• Continuing the strength of Shani embedded in Ketu, Carter's Georgia governorship became his launching pad to the democratic presidential nomination in 1975.

• Elected to USA presidency Nov. 1976, Ketu/L-10 Moon.

• Gochara Rahu/Ketu at precisely 10 degrees of Libra/Aries (exact degree of Carter's rising Shani.)

• Gochara Shani in Karka, moving through Carter's career 10th house.

• Ketu does the bidding of his powerfully exalted lord Shani, the patriotic 4th lord. Ketu is by nature spiritual rather than material or political.  Shri Ketu /Shri Ganesha removes all ego-attachments which are obstacles to spiritual realization.  Although Ketu's lord Shani gives a huge work ethic and a profound sense of justice, Ketu himself is quite detached.

• Carter was not during his Ketu mahadasha especially ego-attached to power, and he did not develop an international power base of ego-motivated world leaders..  Rather, he came across as a rather parochial man of principle, guided by the Baptist religious traditions of his upbringing and either unwilling or unable to expand his vision past that tradition into a truly international perspective. 

• Perhaps the least popular or accessible president since Calvin Coolidge, Carter was considered a weak president internally in the USA for his inability to handle conflict aggressively - in the classic the American style. 

Ketu effects:

• Carter was criticized internationally for giving his wife Rosalynn so much purchase in his presidential decisions.  Particularly in third world countries unfamiliar with women leaders and  equality in marriage (remember this was the late 1970's), Carter was considered to be a weak man unable to "carry a big stick". 

  • It seems pretty clear from the navamsha, with Moon and  Venus (wife) so strong and 7th-lord Mars rising, that Mrs. Rosalynn Carter had a huge amount of control in her husband's life. In the "two person careers" which are so common in politics, the wife does generally have executive powers regarding her husband's decisions -- and thus  L-7 Mangala in Thula navamsha suggests just such a classic political career.

  • Carter was never embarrassed about Rosalynn's participation in his presidency; in fact, he thought equality in marriage and professional life was a natural function of Christian life.  What he didn't seem to perceive or care about was that most of the world, including his own country, wanted a USA president to work solo - as a charismatic, ambitious, ego-driven world power monger.  That would have been a good role for Rahu. 

• But Carter endured an entire presidency of the most powerful country in the world, under mahadasha of Ketu!

L-1/L-8 Shukra mahadasha - 1981-2001

age 56-76

• Jimmy Carter also has lagnesha Shukra/Simha/11.

• Yet, he took the high road, developing the ideologically progressive networking aspect of domain-11 = egalitarianism, orderly distribution networks, and systematic social progress movements.

• Carter's Shukra mahadasha occurred during his age 56-76, when he was wise and had already accumulated major accomplishments e.g. the USA presidency.

• The period 1981-2001 developed his famed "Carter Center" promoting distribution of power throughout the social network via Election Observations.

• Lagnesha in 11 assures that Carter will be exceptionally well-connected, however he is a more mature personality and he uses those connections not for personal gain but rather for the common gain of large groups of humanity.

Compare to similar Thula personalities that share the profile of lagnesha Shukra/Simha.11:

• Martha Stewart, and M. Reza Pahlavi = self-defined orientation to the marketplace and profits. During Martha Stewart's Shukra mahadasha, her age 6-26, she worked as a fashion model and a wealth-building corporate stock saleswoman. Toward the end of the mahadasha, she got married, which further established her personality and position

• The unconfirmed birth time for Larry Ellison (Oracle Corp.) is similar: Thula lagna + empowered lagnesha Shukra in 11, resulting in a very distinctive wealth-and-luxury persona focused on marketplace transactions within a network of buyers, profits.  The material body attracts "regalia" (Simha).

Shukra

• is a good planet for Carter: gainfully (11) positioned and lord of the uchcha Shani. 

• His powerfully exalted kendra-1 Shani = social justice = is deeply empowered during the Shukra mahadasha.

• Shukra carries out the bidding of his public-speaking Mercury.  Budha at 28 degrees of Simha enjoys a very helpful parivartamsha yoga with Surya in Kanya, and Budha very much dominates Shukra, allowing Shukra a greater range of self-expression as lagnesha with a mouthpiece!

 In 1982, Carter became University Distinguished Professor at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and founded a public-policy think-tank, The Carter Center. The Carter Center became very well regarded in the area of non-violent conflict resolution and  human rights development.

• Over the 20 years of Shukra period, Carter engaged in conflict mediation throughout the world, bringing his prestige as a former USA president to successful non-violent resolutions of some very major conflicts and human rights abuses.

• The Carter Center's successes in election monitoring gained worldwide positive attention.

• During these years Carter was also very active with and an icon of Habitat for Humanity. His reputation remained flawlessly respectable throughout Venus period.

L-11 Surya Mahadasha - 2001-2007

age 76-82

• Although Carter is retired from most active service, perhaps the greatest public honor of his life came under the auspices of Surya/Rahu. 

  • Rahu occupies the 10th house of public respect, in a goal-achieving 3/11 angle to mahadasha pati Surya. Rahu does the bidding of his lord Chandra, yuti with Carter's distinguished Shani.

  • Surya as lord of the 11th house of community, democracy, and goal-achievement, in the articulate, intelligent parivartamsha with Budha, will continue to bring Carter the friendship of the world. 

L-10 Chandra Mahadasha - 2007-2017

age 83-93

• In Carter's Jyotisha nativity, Vishaka Chandra is "yoked" to the tremendously powerful and orderly uchcha kendra-1 Shani. (Nisturabhasi yoga, Chandra = Shani; Zasya yoga from Shani).

• Though elderly, Carter can be expected to pursue the cause of social justice with fervor, through the agency of the institutions such as the Carter Center which he has established though the force of his personality and his visionary efforts toward social justice over the course of an extremely productive lifetime. L-10 Chandra period provides the peak social respect and empowerment to impose an orderly environment in one's society.

• Carter will be greatly honored and he will direct all profits from these honors toward the material realization (Shani) of his humanitarian objectives (Shani). His life goals include the systematic spread of social justice through orderly processes and procedures, particularly the justice made available through supervised and lawful democratic elections of social leadership. Shani is very powerful on the material plane and thus, despite the extraordinary difficulty of reaching his goals, he will die satisfied that he has made substantial progress in social justice in this world.
