Mao Zedong's father Mao Yichang rose from the crippling poverty of his Hunan agricultural lineage to a position of considerable material wealth. According to" MZD's father served in the Chinese Army then "became a moneylender and grain merchant, buying up local grain and selling it in the city for a higher price, becoming one of the wealthiest farmers in Shaoshanchong, with 20 acres of land."
