Gochara Rahu-Ketu (transits) comprising a 120-year lifespan

These transit effects are strongly controlled by the ruling bhukti-pathi

AGE RANGE

Nodal return lasts 18 months. Check chart for your precise age.

RAHU-KETU Cycle

Rahu-Ketu full cycle is 18 years.

Half-cycle, return to opposition point, is 9 years.

GENERAL EFFECTS

To experience maximum Nodal return impact, nodal cycles must definitely be coordinated with dasha/bhukti cycles.

(I.e., Rahu return during a Rahu bhukti is intense.)

Age 0

Rahu-Ketu at birth position

wow, here are those core people in my reincarnating team, my parents and caretakers, with whom I have intense relationships from parallel lives !

Age 9-10

first Nodal opposition , when samchara Rahu transits contact radical Ketu , and Ketu transits contact natal Rahu

Age 9/10 is first experience being a Big Kid. In USA this is usually 4th/5th grade, a big step up in responsibility and control. Also a classic era of parental divorce, or birth of a younger sibling to make one a child-parent.

Age 18-19

first Nodal Return , when Rahu transits conjunct its natal place, and Ketu transits conjunct its natal place

Similar to effect of Birth, but moderated by the current bhukti. Age 18-19 is notorious as entrance to adulthood - ready or not!

Intense challenge to the personality, positive and enthusiastic risk -taking era for anyone with a planet conjunct the nodes.

Military draft, national vote, going to college, first baby, moving out ... depending on the affected axis.

Age 27-28

second Nodal opposition, when gochara Rahu transits contact radical Ketu, and Ketu transits contact natal Rahu

Similar to effect of age 9-10 -- but moderated by the current bhukti.

Age 27-28 is not only confirmed adulthood; it also, often coordinates with the dreaded Saturn Return, if Saturn occupies an early degree in the sign.

Often age 27-28 is first marriage , graduate school, or first big responsibilities at work. It's the Big Kid control energy again.

Age 36-37

second Nodal Return , when gochara Rahu transits conjunct its natal place, and Ketu transits conjunct its natal place

Similar to effect of Birth , and 18-19, but moderated by the current bhukti. Very intense risk -taking era for anyone with a planet conjunct the nodes.

(For example, Princess Di, JFK, killed at Nodal Return with her Mars conjunct Rahu.) Wants to have it all, be it all, do it all.

Age 45-46

third Nodal opposition, when samchara Rahu transits contact radical Ketu, and Ketu transits contact natal Rahu

Similar to effect of age 9-10, 27-28 -- but moderated by the current bhukti. The authentic "mid-life crisis" which if coordinated with Saturn opposition (if Saturn is high degree in sign) can evoke return to middle school behaviors. If nodal axis contains other planets, whatever was a problem age 9-10, 27-28 will be a big problem again."Second childhood" can induce fierce cravings for creativity and freedom whilst the individual insists on retaining adult levels of seniority and control. Crazy time for nodal people.

Age 54-55

third Nodal Return , when Rahu transits conjunct its natal place, and Ketu transits conjunct its natal place

Similar to effect of Birth, and 18-19, 36-37 - but moderated by the current bhukti. Can coordinate with second SATURN RETURN (if Saturn is late degree in sign) and can be YEEHAH very demanding as sensual/sexual desires collide with body's need for mature peace. To thine own self be true!

Age 63-64

fourth Nodal opposition, when samchara Rahu transits contact radical Ketu , and Ketu transits contact natal Rahu

Similar to effect of age 9-10, 27-28, 45-46 -- but moderated by the current bhukti. The individual is stressed-out in their attempt to retain authority while indulging in childlike creativity. Often coordinates with early retirement in USA corporations, government service."Big Kid" syndrome.

Age 72-73

fourth Nodal Return , when Rahu transits conjunct its natal place, and Ketu transits conjunct its natal place

Similar to effect of Birth, and 18-19, 36-37,54-55 - but moderated by the current bhukti. Stimulates desire for experience and achievement, not unlike previous nodal returns age 18, 36, and 54. Boost of vitality combined with profound reflections. Age is very helpful in handling the psychic Nodes, so this 4th return may be the best so far.

Age 81-83

Fifth Nodal opposition, when samchara Rahu transits contact radical Ketu , and Ketu transits contact natal Rahu

Similar again to age 9, 27, 45, and 63 -- but moderated by the current bhukti. Persons who choose to sustain their incarnation to the age of 81 will find a type of"mid-life crisis " this year. The purity of deep natural insights comes to battle with the force of entrenched personal habit. One has the realization in depth, that one is one's own worst enemy. Exhilarating poetry and occasional depression may follow these insights.

Age 90-92

Fifth Nodal Return , when Rahu transits conjunct its natal place, and Ketu transits conjunct its natal place

Similar to effect of Birth, and 18-19, 36-37, 54-55, 72-73 - but moderated by the current bhukti. Although the vicissitudes of modern life barely affect the 90-year-old, a 5th Nodal Return is likely to be an Electrifying experience. One may not wish to go public with the knowledge, but this is the age of true Enlightenment. Certain artists and philosophers do their best work at age 90-92.

Age 108-110

Sixth Nodal opposition, when samchara Rahu transits contact radical Ketu , and Ketu transits contact natal Rahu

Similar again to age 9, 27, 45, 63 and 81 -- but moderated by the current bhukti. Completed acquisition of esoteric knowledge structure.

Increasingly possible in dwapara yuga to earn the privilege to complete the conscious awareness at this level, which requires living consciously right up to the sixth Rahu-Ketu return.

In Buddhist tradition the number 108 is extremely auspicious. The result of multiplying key cosmic geometrics 9x12, the amount of 108 is considered perfect in that is contains the entire cosmos. Tremendous insights here.

(See The Secret Doctrine for more on these original numbers.)

Age 118-120

Sixth Nodal Return , when Rahu transits conjunct its natal place, and Ketu transits conjunct its natal place

Traditionally, the sixth nodal return marks the maximum length Of a natural incarnation, when all past-life information has entered the consciousness according to the limits of the genetic structure.

Thus 120 years is the length of a natural lifetime in Hebrew Bible, Vedas, Babylonian scripture, etc.

Q: Hi Barbara,

Thank you for creating such a wonderful site with great information of great Rsi's. While I was reading your page on Rahu, you say that Rahu represents desires that were suppressed, often violently, in previous lives.

If we are spiritual practitioners of some kind, is it not required that we suppress our desires so as to advance spiritually? When I read your page on Rahu I felt that I will be doing myself a disservice by suppressing my desires since they will again resurface in my future lives.

I hope you can enlighten me on this matter. Thank you.

A: Namaste, Great question!

I'd say, different teachers have different methods. So, ask your teacher.

I am not a big fan of brute suppression as IMO suppression tends to intensify the desire, which makes more work in the long run. I am however a fan of compassionate self-management.

My own method is to try to first gain awareness of the presence of the desires, then make a plan to satisfy the desires.

Just Do It?

The most natural response to feeling a desire is to"just do it". One instinctively, reactively indulges the desire and lets the chips fall where they may. This is the default method and its chaotic results are well known. Naturally, Rahu the karaka of desire has a very bad reputation as the instigator of this type of disastrous mess.

Use one thorn to remove another thorn

Another method of satisfying a desire = to replace it with another desire. E.g., the desire for chocolate can be replaced with the desire for wine (lateral replacement), or the desire for an addictive drug can be replaced with the desire for freedom from the drug (upgrade replacement). It's usually a good sign when the desire for freedom-from starts to outweigh the desire for freedom-to.

A campaign of desires

Usually, the conscious person just has to think about what one really wants. That's what I mean about planning for desires - really reflect on known desires and see what feels truly important. Where is the"priority desire" that shapes the campaign of life, behind which all other desires must follow? If the priority desire = the desire for enlightenment/unburdenment, the other desires of course get de-prioritized. But they don't go away!.

A calculus of desire-management

For example, a student's instinctive desire to sleep late and miss class can be replaced/over-ruled by the conscious desire to get out of bed and earn an A. But the person still resents having to get out of bed, and they will probably sleep in twice as long as soon as the priority desire (for the A) is satisfied. (In Jyotisha, Rahu in bhava-12 shows a desire to stay in bed.) Let's say that this student declares: I'll drag my carcass out of bed every morning to get to this darned class, but as soon as this class is finished, I'm going to sleep for a week!

IMO that would be a smart way of handling the desire - don't suppress it, but rather 'schedule' it for a time when it won't be so harmful to indulge. This is a trivial example but it shows one potential iteration of an elaborate calculus of desire-management that Rahu's eruptive passions may require.

Storm-surge of desires

Even with the most savvy desire-management habits, sometimes desires just spring out of the subconscious (usually during Rahu periods). These 'storm surge' events require a strong and principled mental response.

Rahu tends to make the cart run away with the horse. It's good to have a plan when old desires erupt again from the suppressed caverns of the subconscious. If you want to re-suppress them, because perhaps your teacher recommends that, by all means follow your teacher's instructions. But even if the plan is simply"immediate re-suppression without further ado," know the Rahu-response plan and be ready to enforce it.

Jyotisha's early-warning system

Rahu periods of the Vimshottari Dasha are good predictors of what type of desires will arise and when. Forewarned is forearmed!

Sincerely, Barbara Pijan Lama, Jyotisha
